We are providing a morning and an afternoon workshop. Attendees my choose to attend one or both. Refreshments will be provided, but not lunch.

Morning - Welcome to YUI 3

YUI 3 is the current generation of the YUI library that Yahoo open-sourced in 2006; YUI powers tens of thousands of sites across the web today. YUI 3 is powerful, scalable, and fast, the perfect complement to pages that need a few event handlers or animation as well as major applications whose UI is largely driven by JavaScript.

During this 3-hour workshop, we'll work directly with YUI 3 to address a series of common tasks:

- Loading YUI 3 on the page

- Making use of the Node API to access DOM elements and collections

- Handling DOM events

- Built-in event delegation support

- "Special" events: available, contentready, and domready

- Using YUI 3 components:

       IO

       Animation

       Drag and Drop

Using YUI 2 and YUI 3 Gallery modules

- Optimizing your loading strategy

- Building YUI 3-based components -- your "instant API" template for objects that have attributes and emit events

The content of this workshop includes exercises that will allow you to further explore some of the concepts presented. Please be bring your laptop.  The content is appropriate for all engineers who do frontend engineering.  Familiarity with JavaScript, CSS, HTML and the DOM API are required.

Afternoon - Access any data on the web using YQL

Yahoo Query Language (YQL) is a powerful SQL-like language that allows you to query data from web pages and web services. It currently serves hundreds of millions of queries a month. YQL uses JavaScript to make easy to write "tables" that allow you to extend YQL to use any web service or data.

During this 3 hour workshop we'll use YQL to do some exciting application work:

   * Accessing various web APIs using YQL

   * Making complex queries to multiple web services using YQL

   * Displaying information on a site including using maps

   * Sharing information back to social networks to encourage participation

This session is aimed at intermediate and above developers. Please bring a laptop because it's going to be all hands-on. SQL knowledge is a bonus, but by no means essential. Familiarity with HTML, and JavaScript is required.
